MATTHEW RHODES BIO

The story behind the guy with the crazy hair!

A little quirky, a little funny, but dedicated!

Born and raised in the far west Chicago suburbs, music has always been a big part of Matt’s life as his parents had a love for listening to many different genres of music. Hearing a mixture of Waylon and Queen in the same car ride was not uncommon.

While growing up, during his younger years, Matt would setup the Christmas lights in the basement, make a fake guitar out of cardboard, and put on pretend rock shows dreaming someday entertaining on a big stage.

Turning dreams to reality, Matt picked up a real guitar at age 14 and started to learn how to play. With already a background in trumpet and piano, Matt started plucking away on his own and learning how to play some of his favorite songs. While learning songs and how they were structured, Matt decided to try and write some fun songs on his own. It all started with a funny song about his old dog Axle.

As high school bands came and went, it became time to venture out a little further. Matt started getting more involved with the local music scene and has been blessed to work with some GREAT local talent in such bands as SmackDown, PUSH!, Buck Naked, Trash Martini. He’s currently in Super-Unknown, Aeth3r, and Shape Shifter.  And, from time to time you can see Matt subbing in for a local band as well!

Getting out in front of a crowd and entertaining is a love, but pouring your heart and soul onto a piece of paper and crafting it into a song that others can relate to is quite a unique experience. Having penned songs for his band SmackDown as well as a nice catalog of his own in the Rock and Country genre, Matt has recently started to travel between Chicago and Nashville to see where his songs will go. Being able to construct a song and play it in front of an audience is amazing. And as he will tell you, playing an original song and watching the crowd move to the beat and be singing along by the end of the song is extremely rewarding.

Whether you see Matt playing a cover song in one of his bands or an original song with just him and his guitar, you can always count on a happy smile, happy ears, and a good time!
